Sons for the return home:
Typically not the type of novel I would pick myself to read, so initially I did find it quite difficult to relate to and hold interest while reading. Once I got into the book I did begin to enjoy it a bit more. Not knowing much at all really about the Samoan culture there were a few moments where I found what was happening a little hard to understand, so I ended up spending a bit of time researching a bit on the Samoan background which surprised me and helped me understand the novel a lot better.
I have never moved countries, or had to make such a huge cultural jump so I couldn’t relate on such a high level. But I have moved cities within New Zealand and being quite a shy person I can understand the personal struggles and the emotional toll leaving your home which is all you have ever known and is your comfort zone, can take on you.
I always enjoy reading about different cultures and I find it amazing how much of an impact culture has on a society and how so many societies seem worlds apart as a result of different cultures. I have read a lot about the cultural differences in Somalia and many Asian countries, so I did find it quite interesting learning further about another completely different set of cultural roots. I always find it amazing knowing how people from different cultures can move to a completely new world with different cultural beliefs but still hold such a firm grip on the heart of the culture they come from. In saying that I also admire those who are able adapt to different societies and remain open minded to different cultures without losing their own.
